06 001 Pete Lake Camp

In mid-July of '77 we find the climbers at the Pete Lk where just before packing up this stuff, were met by three beautiful hiker girls barely wearing high cut skimpy gym shorts and bra-less cropped tank tops. As the young firm lovelies disappeared around the lake, the climbers wanting more, decided to help the girls with a "Tick check". They quickly caught the girls and explained the disrobing requirements for the check. The girls hiked on up the trail laughing and the climbers were left drooling.

On the approach to Lemah Mtn, the climbers where stopped cold in their tracks and unable to proceed. The delay was due solely to the breathtaking view of the upper Lemah Creek Valley.

The climbers marched across the swampy Lemah Valley and then climbed up the Northern Ice Couloir before exiting left on grassy ledges to cross the Lemah Glacier. Alpine Lakes Area. 77

06 009 Cloudy Lemah Summit Tom B

The Lemah Mountain summit was shrouded by clouds this day so there would be no good view from the top. The rain soaked heather was much like slimey bubble kelp of the seashore and just as slick.

06 010 Lemah Lounge from the Lemah Glacier
Just as the rain started, the climbers found a convenient boulder that provided shelter from the heavy down pour. It rained and rained without a pause. So, they made camp under the huge boulder; drank hot cocoa, munched glorp and lounged around for the rest of the day. The camp near Whinnimic Tarn was christened Lemah Lounge. The next day they climbed into the clouds and groped their way to the top of Lemah Mtn.

06 011 Tom B climbs the Lemah Glacier

On the ascent of Lemah Mountain East side, a few crevasses on the Lemah Glacier needed to be negotiated. A convenient snow bridge over the bergschrund at the head of the glacier appeared to allow easy access to the summit rocks. We heard rockfall nearby and quickly looked up to see mountain goats, a nanny and two kids, dash around Lemah Thumb.

Some say the views from Lemah Mountain are amongst the best in the state. Located on the Cascade Crest and midway between the two major cross state highway passes, the vantage can see most high summits North and South along with the Olympics to the West and the flats of Eastern Washington. Not this day.

The climbers traversed North on the Lemah Glacier to get to the descent route on the Northern Ice Couloir.
