03 035 Mount Rainier from Tamanos Mountain
The Northeast flank of Mount Rainier holds the massive Emmons Glacier. Together with the Winthrop Glacier, they easily form the largest ice mass in the conterminous U.S.. Samuel Emmons, for whom the glacier is now named, called it the White River Glacier. This view from the top of Tamanos Mtn near Owyhigh Lake also shows the descriptively named Fryingpan Glacier that sits in the hollow East slope of Little Tahoma.
03 036 South from Tamanos Mountain with Mount Adams
South of Owyhigh Lakes are the high alpine meadows at the headwaters of Kotsuck Creek. Further South beyond the twin summits of Double Peak are the snowy crests of Goat Rocks Wilderness. Still farther South are the Glacial clad heights of Mount Adams. This seldom visited area around The Cowlitz Chimneys in Mount Rainier National Park commonly sees large flocks of Mountain Goats numbering fifty or more. Aug 73.

03 048 Puma Chickens Ptarmigans on Iron Mtn
The Ptarmigan is an alpine bird we called Puma Chicken. It uses stealth by changing its plumage to blend into the alpine environment. In this scene it is only partially snow covered so the feathers are only partially white. Some say they are a flightless birds and understandable when you see the frantic flapping at sunset as they home-in on friendly calls to crash in a ball near their nesting burrows before dark.
03 049 Mount Rainier at sunset from the top of Iron Mtn
From the summit of Iron Mountain, Mt. Rainier displays a misty pink evening gown at sunset. This remote Southwest quadrant of the majestic sleeping volcano is a maze of crumbling cleavers and treacherous headwalls. The South Tahoma Headwall sweeps up in one gigantic step of nearly 4000' to culminate at Point Success. At its base, the S Tahoma Glacier still entombs 32 honored Marines of the tragic 1946 plane crash.
03 050 Lewis G on Iron Mtn at sunset
The assault on Iron Mountain from Devils Dream camp was productive as shown here by this artsy sunset pose on the summit. Located in Mount Rainier National Park just up mountain from Indian Henery's Hunting Ground. When the native guide Sluiskin lead the first climbers to Rainier, he purposely routed the pale face newcomers away from the Hunting Ground.
06 075 Mount Rainier From Sunrise Point
Sunrise Point in Mount Rainier National Park has a good view of the NorthWest side of the sleeping volcano. The road to Sunrise and Yakima Park closes every year after the first major snow accumulation.
06 076 Little Tahoma Sunrise Park from Antler Pk
Past Sunrise Park and across the White River Valley stands the sharp summit of Little Tahoma. Little T is popular because of its height (third highest in WA.), individuality, and alpine quality.
